Innkeepers and History

The Inn was built in 1913 as the trauma of the 1906 Earthquake was fading and the young city was reaching out to the world with the creation of the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, celebrating the completion of the Panama Canal and showcasing the rise of San Francisco from the earthquake’s devastation.

The Golden Gate Hotel was originally planned as a modest hotel for business travelers, together with the growing numbers of tourists traveling from the East Coast to visit the fabled land of sunshine in California. Artifacts from this era such as the Murphy Beds no longer exist, however the Claw Foot tubs and “Pillbox” commode tanks in many of the rooms happily remain.
